Pre-school and Day Care Centre at Kaleniya

While Tony, Frances and Soraya were in Sri Lanka in January/February 2024 they heard about a small Pre-school and Day Care Centre situated in a very poor area on the outskirts of Colombo, run by the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanaud. The children they help are from very poor families, many of whom live in the slums along the river bank near by. The Sisters try to collect 2000Rs. per month from each family, to cover the cost of food, books and uniforms for the children, but many of the families are unable to pay, especially now that the cost of living has risen so much. Many of these children have only a mother or fathers who are alcoholics or drug abusers. These children are from Bhuddist , Hindu and Christian backgrounds.

The Pre-school offers education, food, care and shelter to children on a daily basis and The Day Care Centre offers food, care, shelter and a place to do homework and study .The children remain with the Sisters until 6pm , when their mothers finish work. The Sisters are given no help by the Government or the Churches and would have to dramatically reduce the capacity or increase their charges for the Pre-school and Day Care Centre if they cannot find some help.

Tony, Frances and Soraya went to meet with the Sisters, and were very impressed by the care and love shown to these children, and by how happy the children were each time they saw them . They felt that this might be a very worthwhile project to become involved with. We discussed this with the Trustees and we were all delighted to take this on as a new project from the 1 st May.

The Pre-school and Day Care Centre will take the poorest children totally free of charge and we will refurbish the facilities and  increase the capacity over the next few years.
